Two months ago, 54-year-old Cath King was still stacking shelves at Woolworths five nights a week just to help make ends meet.

She says the response has been “phenomenal”, allowing her to reduce her hours at the supermarket to 12 hours a week.

It’s a fear that the creator of the #buyfromthebush movement, Grace Brennan, says resonates with other rural business owners. But she hopes the ‘bush brand’ is being strengthened so that customers do not just view their purchases as a “feel-good investment” but start to recognise rural-made products as “stylish, valuable, unique and worthwhile”.Ms Brennan hopes to seize on the momentum behind her campaign, which since its creation in October has generated about $2.6 million in revenue for drought-affected businesses across Australia and now counts more than 330,000 followers between Instagram and Facebook.

For now, Ms King says she feels “very lucky” to be able to spend most of her time sewing, her passion since age seven.“It’s allowed me to realise a dream,” she says. “Our bank balance has never looked as healthy as it is now.”
