When Edward Enninful assumed the helm of British Vogue in 2017, he promptly dispatched Naomi Campbell to interview fellow south Londoner Sadiq Khan for the December issue, his first as editor-in-chief.
I was a proper fan. So, what was it like for you growing up in south London? Did anything about your race ever get brought up?Well, we had a great childhood, but it wasn’t easy. It wasn’t uncommon for people to use the N-word or the P-word, and the basic rule we had growing up was that that was unacceptable. If somebody used the N-word or the P-word, there’d be a fight, because you can’t allow people to get away with that. The great thing was that there was a sense of solidarity.
What do you think the challenges are in the wake of Brexit?One of the things that worries me about this country choosing to leave the EU is the obstacles put in the way of talent coming here. And what’s the secret of every great city in the world? Talent.I’m concerned that they’re going to go elsewhere. I wanted to put that question to you because, in the UK, we’ve always been known for our talent – for arts and fashion, for our designers – and we’re going to lose it.
