In 2006, a rockfall occurred at the Beaconsfield gold mine in northern Tasmania, trapping Brant Webb and Todd Russell for 14 days underground and killing their colleague and father-of-three Larry Knight. 9News
"Todd was in trouble … and all I could do was just say, 'Look buddy, we've got to hold on'," Webb told the"I said to myself, 'I'm not dying here'," Russell added.
Russell said the blast had him curled up into the "foetal position" in the cage with a lot of rock on top of him inside the cage. Although both men were physically near one another, they couldn't see each other because of the amount of rock Russell was buried under. The more he moved to try and get out, the more rock packed in around him.
Webb said as he fell in and out of consciousness, he'd remove bits of rock from his body and eventually managed to get his hips and body free.
