Padres have yet to reach their goal, but signs they might have their best chance are all around the clubhouse in spring training
Players emerged from a team meeting at the start of spring training in 2019 raving about a rare address from A.J. Preller.with his detailed knowledge of what seemed like every player in the room, ticking off their accomplishments in college, the minor leagues and/or in the majors and telling them how much he believed in them.
This isn’t your father’s Padres. Or even the Padres of your older brother or sister. Really, it’s not the Padres anyone is used to. And in an effort to make sure the next run to the National League Championship Series doesn’t take another 24 years, the Padres have continued to invest in players at an unprecedented and previously unimaginable level.
Machado and Stammen are the only major league players remaining in Padres camp from 2019. Three minor league pitchers were also in the big-league clubhouse then. That’s it for the carryover. The real transformation is in the guys who are big names — or were big names at one time — that are here but without fanfare.
Matt Carpenter being in the Peoria clubhouse would have in many springs been the talk of the complex.Maybe if he still has some of what he showed last season he can help lift the offense. And talk about intangibles. This guy is known around the league as one of the good guys, a tireless worker, willing to share what he knows with young teammates.
