The old theme park closed back in 1999 and has been derelict for over 20 years
Morecambe is undergoing a host of regeneration and development projects including the former Frontierland theme park site, Eden Project, the Winter Gardens and new planning applications linked to hotels.
The former Wild West-themed site is the focus of a new project board created by the city council. The board is a group of selected councillors and others who plan to hold some public consultation over priorities for the Frontierland site and tendering processes for developers or contractors. The board is tasked with making effective progress with Fronterland's future.. At one point it was owned by supermarket Morrison's.
Earlier this year, the council sought expressions of interest from private firms and received eight proposals. It said that illustrated there is interest from private business to work the council and others to bring the old land back into use. In Morecambe and Lancaster, some council leisure and culture services, such as tourist information centres and museums have had budget cuts this year. The Platform faces funding cuts next year so a new operating model is needed,
Eden bosses are also hosting regular community talks about Eden can complement other businesses and the wider tourist economy, locally and regionally, around Morecambe, Morecambe Bay, Lancaster, the south Lakes and Yorkshire Dales. Speaking recently, he said: “It’s anticipated that Eden Project Morecambe will bring 750,000 people a year on average to the area, a huge economic injection."
Catherine Potter, a Labour councillor, has raised her concerns about the Morecambe Bay Hotel's potential change of use. She said good existing hotel space needed to be kept for the town's future.
