Aerial mission to winch 21 crew members to safety called off due to storm conditions as tugboats deployed to stabilise drifting vessel
An operation is under way to tow the cargo ship stranded off the Royal national park south ofPort Authority’s John Finch, who was placed in control of the cargo ship mid-morning on Monday, said he was “hopeful” it would be on its way by Tuesday after all three tugs had arrived to move the vessel into safer waters.
“It’s going to make the towage operation quite difficult because you can imagine in an eight-metre swell the vessel is going to be rising and falling, rolling.” By mid-afternoon, three tugboats were deployed in close proximity to the ship in an attempt to stabilise the 170-metre long vessel and stop it from drifting further from its precarious position 1.8km from the shore.
