Homicides in San Diego County increased 3 percent; nearly three of every five cases involved guns

San Diego was one of several large cities where there was an increase in homicides in 2021 compared to the previous year. Seven of the 10 most populous U.S. cities also saw increases, including Chicago , New York and Los Angeles .San Diego had the second-lowest homicide rate of the 10 most populous cities, with a rate of 4.1 homicides per 100,000 residents. San Jose took the lead with a rate of 3.2 homicides per 100,000 residents.

Forty percent of the homicide victims were Latino and 26 percent were Black — a disproportionate outcome, given Latinos account for 34 percent of county residents and Blacks make up 5 percent of the population.Clockwise from top left: Tom Merriman, Octavio Mendoza, Madhav Gupta, Mario Fierro, Mary Knott and Akili Cobbs, represent 6 of the 118 people killed in San Diego in 2021.

Two high-profile cases involved allegations of domestic violence. One is the case of May “Maya” Millete, a 41-year-old Chula Vista mother who disappeared in January and remains missing. In San Diego, police recovered 2,167 guns in 2019, 1,718 in 2020 and 2,220 last year. The department confiscated 78 ghost guns in 2019, 210 in 2020 and 545 last year, according to police data. In some cases those weapons are found in the hands of people with felony convictions, who were barred by state law from possessing any guns or ammunition.

The extra hands — the four detectives and detective sergeant on the newest team — have allowed the homicide unit to “distribute the workload, allowing detectives to dig deeper, spend more time working on case leads and better balance their difficult work life with their personal lives and families,” Campbell said.

Landale said laws intended to prevent gun violence are also important. She noted that the San Diego City Attorney’s Office often uses what are known asto — under state law — keep guns away from people who are deemed a danger to themselves or others. The city uses gun violence restraining orders at a higher rate than agencies in other parts of the state.
