A ground stop was lifted around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, but not before thousands of flights nationwide were affected in some way by the outage.

The FAA lifted its ground stop at airports nationwide just before 8 a.m. central time and flights started taking off again after a systemwide outage of the FAA’s Notice to Air Missions system, which feeds critical information to airplanes and pilots. While thousands of flights were delayed, the disruption will continue to trickle throughout the system today as airlines scramble to rebuild schedules for planes and crew members. It comes just days after Dallas-based Southwest Airlines suffered its own massive cancellation event in which it had to cancel more than 16,700 flights to end the holiday season.
