Russian forces have launched missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, air fields and military bases in the opening stage of an invasion that could mobilise 200,000 troops CroweDM | Ukraine Russia invasion

Russian forces have launched missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, air fields and military bases in the opening stage of an invasion that could mobilise 200,000 troops and quickly escalate into one of the largest conflict in Europe since World War II.

Ukraine’s border guard said that it was being shelled from five regions, including from Crimea in the south and Belarus to the north, and that Russian forces had crossed into the country, as the nation’s authorities called for urgent additional sanctions by world leaders to try to halt the conflict. “Circumstances require us to take decisive and immediate action,” Mr Putin said in the speech that interrupted an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

Russia confirmed it was targeting military facilities across the country, including air fields and anti-aircraft systems. The government in Kyiv called it a “full-scale invasion” and Zelensky imposed martial law.At least eight people have been killed and nine wounded by Russian shelling in Ukraine, according to reports by Reuters. A government official told the newswire one person had been killed and another injured in the Kyiv region.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she and other leaders in the European Union would discuss further sanctions on Russia after the “unprovoked and unjustified” military offensive. The senior Ukrainian diplomat in Australia, Volodymyr Shalkivskyi, welcomed the Australian sanctions announced this week but said the military in Ukraine was “outnumbered” by the Russian forces and would need more support.

“There will be further waves of sanctions as we identify those responsible for these egregious acts, including, as I discussed this afternoon with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, moving on over 300 members of the Russian Parliament,” he said.
