Game three of the Origin series will be rightly remembered as one of the greatest of them all as Ben Hunt put the finishing touches on a classic Maroons ambush.
Extraordinary. Few other words could begin to describe what transpired over 80 minutes at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night. Queensland would win the match 22-12 and claim the State of Origin series but that only scrapes the surface of a famous night of rugby league.
Dane Gagai and Matt Burton channelled the spirit of Wally Lewis and Mark Geyer, swinging wildly at each other at the start of the second half before being given their marching orders for a 10-minute spell. The old Lang Park was a tinderbox and it was a good thing they don’t sell cans to the locals, who looked like spilling from the bleachers.
He struggled to his feet and it was clear he was done, with Queensland reaping the early benefit of having a big body returning the ball as Oates made his presence felt with his first carry. The advantage lasted just minutes. The Maroons would lose a pair of players to some frightening contact to the head, beginning with Selwyn Cobbo, who was knocked out with friendly fire by Carrigan.
But with the Maroons struggling with the frantic pace, NSW attacked through the middle to hit back as Luai chased the Cleary kick to level the scores at 6-6 after 20 minutes.
