Coroner Elisabeth Armitage is investigating the 2019 death of Warlpiri-Luritja man Kumanjayi Walker, who was shot by then-Constable Zachary Rolfe during an attempt to arrest him.Mr Rolfe, who is no longer a serving police officer, was acquitted of charges of murder, manslaughter and engaging in a violent act causing death in early 2022.
"That's the way we saw it, and we were having a laugh at ourselves… 25 blokes, that's how we'd deal with what we had to deal with on a daily basis. Sergeant Bauwens told the coroner he had been on sick leave from the police force since mid-2022 for various reasons but noted he had felt "morally compromised" by "unjust" aspects of the coronial inquest and treatment of Zachary Rolfe, alleging there had been "multiple influences from outside agencies" and "corruption".
