Wilcannia residents say they have been blindsided by a decision to drastically alter the plans for a weir to be built along the Darling River.

Residents in the remote community of Wilcannia have been left "very angry" after the designs for a long-awaited new weir were changed without consultation.

"The focus is around long-term safety and operation of the previous proposed design, the environmental impacts of it," development project manager Sarah Horne said. But Tilpa grazier and Australian Floodplain Association chair Justin McClure said those were "invented reasons" and that the environmental assessment was based on flawed criteria."I think there's a lot of mistrust the criteria used was the correct one.

Wilcannia Tourism Association president Bill Elliot said the consultation process was "excellent" and the design of the weir was how the community envisioned it.But the plan was cancelled in late 2023 and without warning or discussion a revised concept was introduced. Mr McClure said the new proposal was "not acceptable" and the community of Wilcannia deserved the weir they were presented with in 2022."They don't want it — take it back, fix it, come and talk to us and build the structure that we want."
