Richmond triple premiership defender Dylan Grimes may have played the last game of AFL career after injury ended his 2024 season early. Grimes has undergone back surgery and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. The club said there is no set date for his return to training, and the exact timeline of his injury will remain TBC. The 32-year-old has only managed five games this year and hasn’t played since the Round 8 loss to Fremantle.
Grimes was a key member of Richmond’s three premiership teams in 2017, ‘19 and ‘20 and won the best and fairest award in 2021 before he was made joint captain with Toby Nankervis in 2022. He stepped down from the role on the eve of this season with Nankervis taking on the sole captaincy. Grimes’ season-ending injury continues a horror run for the club with Josh Gibcus , Judson Clarke , Mykelti Lefau , Sam Naismith and Tylar Young already sidelined for the year.
