World leaders have called for the upholding of international law including territorial sovereignty, while failing to condemn the war in Ukraine, after concerns there would not be an agreement for the first time in the summit's history.
abc.net.au/news/g20-leaders-make-joint-declaration-do-not-condemn-ukraine-war/102836476The world's most powerful leaders have managed to agree on a joint declaration at the G20 meeting, despite deep divisions on the Ukraine War, the host India has announced.
"The peaceful resolution of conflicts, and efforts to address crises as well as diplomacy and dialogue are critical. "While noting the G20 is not the platform to resolving geopolitical and security issues, the leaders recognised they can have significant consequences for the global economy," Indian Foreign Minister Dr S Jaishankar said on Saturday. As the rotating host of the G20, India has been facing pressure to draw consensus among leaders who cannot even be in the same room anymore – it seemed like an impossible task.
Delhi received a makeover to project an image of India's potential — homeless people were evicted from their dwellings under bridges, roads were resurfaced, and gardens were planted while Mr Modi's face was emblazoned on billboards across the city. This moment has become a symbol of what India wants to be the new world order — one where it's a leader with developing nations behind it.
Beijing holds enormous influence in Africa after years of financial investment, and the Union's admission into the G20 appears to be the peak of India's attempts to get a hold in the region. If President Xi Jinping was in the room at the G20 leaders' summit in New Delhi the hug between Mr Assoumani and Mr Modi could have been awkward, but the leader is notably absent.
