Former student protest leader Gabriel Boric, 35, pulls off a win against far-right Jose Antonio Kast to become Chile's youngest modern president
Gabriel Borica was among several activists elected to Congress in 2014 after leading protests for higher quality education.
With 68 percent of 46,887 polling stations reporting on Sunday, Boric had 55 percent of the votes, compared to 45 percent for his opponent, lawmaker Jose Antonio Kast. Kast, who has a history of defending Chile's past military dictatorship, finished ahead in the first round of voting last month but failed to secure a majority of votes. Boric broke a precedent.
But no president has ever been elected without winning in the capital, Santiago, which Boric carried comfortably in the first round.
