GAF blew its first meeting with West Dallas residents | Opinion
West Dallas neighbors protest the shingle manufacturer GAF at the company's first community meeting on Nov. 30 at the Anita Martinez Recreation Center in Dallas.Whatever hope there might have been for a collaborative process in West Dallas for the shingle company GAF to close shop and move out may be lost.
That’s what happens at these sorts of meetings. And in a community where environmental danger has been part and parcel of life for generations, that anger is to be expected. What a mess. And it’s too bad because GAF actually has a plan worth listening to that includes a seven-year timeline to relocate, clean up the land and rezone the property..
GAF officials became visibly frustrated when leaders from the community began asking questions. Instead of listening to the questions, they told residents to write their questions on notecards that would be read aloud at the end of the meeting.“The fact of the matter is that you are a 3 billion-plus dollar company that has access to resources and connections that this neighborhood does not have. You have a history of privilege that this neighborhood does not have,” Cisneros said.
When residents did get to ask questions, they revolved, to no one’s surprise, around emissions from the factory. GAF’s representative Tommy Richardson told residents that officials would answer those questions at the next meeting in January.
