Senior Labor minister Katy Gallagher has confirmed she did have prior knowledge of some details of a rape allegation made by former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins, but denied she misled parliament over the issue.
In June 2021, Senator Reynolds had fired back at questions from Senator Gallagher and Senator Wong about the handling of Ms Higgins' allegation.
The text messages published by The Australian newspaper, and not seen by the ABC, included references by Mr Sharaz to Senator Gallagher being "an old friend" and being "angry and wants to help". "Mr Sharaz provided me with information — I think we've seen that in the paper in the last couple of days," Senator Gallagher said.
"I said to her exactly that — that I had been made aware, I wasn't aware of the full allegations that were made public on when the interviews went to air, but I was clear about that two years ago.

Peter Dutton is ‘right’ to raise concerns about Brittany Higgins sagaThe Opposition Leader is “right” to raise concerns about how the Brittany Higgins saga has played out, says Sky News host Peta Credlin. “Because, more and more it appears that Anthony Albanese, Tanya Plibersek, and Katy Gallagher - others too - all weaponised the Higgins claims,” Ms Credlin said. “Presumably because they were only too happy to turn an allegation into a fact to embarrass the government in the build-up to an election and to reinforce the Coalition's supposed ‘women problem’.” SkyNews.com.au has approached Katy Gallagher's office for comment on the text messages.
