The Greens have launched a scathing attack on Treasurer Jim Chalmers after remarks he made about Qantas a day after the airline unveiled a record profit.

The flying kangaroo on Thursday revealed an underlying profit before tax of $2.47 billion, with the statutory profit after tax coming in at $1.74 billion.

Jim Chalmers has come under fire for remarks he made on Qantas. Picture: NCA NewsWire / Martin Ollman Mr Chalmers also defended the government's decision to block Qatar Airways from operating an additional 21 flights a week into Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. "I think one of the big misconceptions about what's happening here is that somehow this is preventing extra capacity from being in the system.

Elizabeth Watson-Brown has blasted Jim Chalmers for defending Qantas after the airline unveiled a record profit. Picture: Josh Woning Ms Watson-Brown said"it's only right" that Qantas repay public money, saying it took billions of dollars in handouts while at the same time sacking thousands of workers.

"Instead of that money going to CEO bonuses and share buybacks, it should be going to paying workers, improving their conditions, and making flights cheaper for everyday people." "We have so much capacity being added, there's a flood of capacity coming on, this is not about protecting Qantas," Mr Joyce told Sky News Australia. In a separate interview, Mr Joyce said the $2.7 billion came in part through government renting Qantas aircraft and for JobKeeper after 25,000 people were stood down.
