NRL: St George Illawarra Dragons have beaten the Melbourne Storm in Victoria for the first time in 25 years.

Fair to say it seemed an overly ambitious prediction at the time given the Dragons were only a couple of months removed from a dismal 16th-placed finish. But now, it doesn’t seem so silly with the Red V one of the surprise packets of 2024, sitting in eighth and right in the thick of the finals race.

Flanagan always maintained that he would coach in the NRL again. He had to bide his time and work as an assistant at the Dragons and Manly as well as dabble in commentary before finally given his opportunity in June of last year. Even before his time at the Dragons started, Flanagan wasted no time earmarking who he wanted to bring to the club and who he wanted to keep.

What a masterstroke though, with Lomax excelling in the new role and earning himself a maiden Blues jersey because of it.last year that he found it difficult to recruit and improve the Dragons roster. At that time the only new signings were prop Hame Sele and son Kyle . Fox League’s Michael Ennis, who played under Flanagan at the Sharks, says the coach’s ability to get the most out of his players is one of his greatest strengths.

“He’s got them so physically fit and ready to compete that there’s been a real shift in the player’s confidence in the way that they’ve responded in games after not being able to do that in previous weeks.”As Ennis referenced, there have been plenty of bumps in the road this season, most notably an extremely heavy loss to the Roosters on Anzac Day and a couple of other thumpings at the hands of the Cowboys, Panthers and Bulldogs.

“There’s definitely some genuine feeling and there is a degree of it being personal between Cameron Ciraldo and Flanagan,” Hooper said.
