Carmichael ran third on the Liberal ballot, we’re told, and lost the contest to Dixson, five votes to four. Dixson declined to comment. But it was word of an agreement that Carmichael had struck with another leadership hopeful that has set tongues wagging in the high-stakes world of eastern suburbs politics.

The agreement, according to people familiar with the caucus vote, was believed to involve Carmichael handing over the mayoralty to one-time Senate hopeful and Vaucluse ward councillorafter one year, should he have won the vote over the weekend. Jarvis ran second on the caucus ballot and received no votes, we’re told. Carmichael declined to comment on the ballot. At the centre of the Liberal Party split was the issue of building high-rise property in Woollahra.

Carmichael was for the idea, which we’d imagine renders him persona non grata among a significant number of his constituents. Dixson, meanwhile, is against. , dated September 28, Carmichael passed on the result of the party room ballot and told the premier he’d “declined to seek to renew” his term as deputy mayor.

He went on to compare himself to John Waddell, who served as the member for Waverley some 87 years ago, and called for the construction of the Eastern Suburbs Railway.

“I must urge you to go full steam ahead and complete the Eastern Suburbs Railway,” Carmichael wrote in his letter. When reached on Wednesday, Carmichael did not confirm or deny the agreement his colleagues believe he struck with Jarvis. He said he was looking forward to some rest.

“Generally speaking though, the past two years have thrown up some immensely difficult challenges. Holding the fabric of our community together, in the face of rising antisemitism – and where that tragically went – has been brutal,” Carmichael told CBD.

“Likewise, so has working through the Woollahra station announcement,” he continued, in what could well be one of the most stunning political segues we’ve been furnished with in some time. Still, Carmichael wants to be sure we pass on his congratulations to Dixson and her deputy, Hugh Woodgate, following a council vote confirming their leadership on Monday evening. Well, this sounds like it’ll be fun.

On Wednesday, some of the biggest names in conservative politics were looking forward to bowling into the 40th anniversary of the HR Nicholls Society Conference at Le Meridien in Melbourne. The conference flier carried the headline “Arbitration In Contempt” and was accompanied by a cartoon picturing Prime Minister Anthony Albanese aboard a scuppered ship emblazoned with the words “HMS Industrial Relations”. The guest list was dotted with current and former coalition powerbrokers – and strivers.

Among those expected to attend were Senator, chief executive of the Australian Resources & Energy Employer Association.
