South-east Queensland mayors are heading to California and Canada on an 11-day fact-finding mission to gather solutions to transport, waste and population issues ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games.
Now the region’s mayors – who first pushed Brisbane’s bid to host the Games – will travel to Los Angeles to meet its mayor, as well as the new boss of the US air taxi business that landed in King George Square in July last year, and the chief executive of Vancouver’s public transport network.
Los Angeles will host the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2028 and previously hosted the 1932 and 1984 Games, while Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympics in 2010.Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, who hosts the South East Queensland Council of Mayors, said they wanted to learn from other cities’ experiences.
“Learning how other host cities are using their Games to deliver long-term advantages for their residents is an important step on the runway to Brisbane 2032,” Schrinner said. The delegation leaves next week to meet Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Metro Vancouver senior transport officials, and newly appointed Wisk Aero chief executive Dr Brian Yutko.where the 11 member councils pay a membership fee from monies raised from ratepayers and mayors serve as directors.
“Los Angeles is delivering the largest mass transit construction program in the United States to connect the Los Angeles region ahead of their 2028 Games,” he said. “That is an area we are obviously interested in.”
