The trial for the murder of gangland lawyer Joseph 'Pino' Acquaro has been delayed indefinitely, after Victoria Police won a High Court bid to protect the identity of an informer in the case.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton has won a High Court bid to keep a source's identity secret, delaying a high-profile gangland murder trial.

Supreme Court Justice Christopher Beale ordered the documents' release in November 2022, finding they were "likely to be of substantial assistance to the defence in the conduct of their case".The chief commissioner argued the documents' release would put a source — known as 'Informer Z' — at a "real risk of death and reprisals" and would only be of "slight assistance" to the defence.

It found the original judge's reasons were inadequate, and didn't include reasoning as to whether revealing the documents outweighed the public interest in protecting Informer Z's identity. One source close to the matter said it would "inevitably" delay Mr Crupi's trial, almost six years after his arrest.Mr Acquaro was shot outside his East Brunswick gelato shop Gelobar in March 2016.
