Number of deaths described by senior officer as ‘unacceptable’ during budget estimates hearing

Eleven suspected gangland killings have taken place in the last two years in Sydney’s south-west, with police telling a parliamentary committee the situation is “unacceptable”.budget estimates hearing on Wednesday, by the NSW police’s investigations and counter-terrorism deputy commissioner, David Hudson.

It is well known that two groups were connected to gang-related crime in the region, but it was not as simple as just arresting those people, Hudson told the hearing. “NSW has the fewest number of police officers in Australia – 244 per 100,000 residents,” said Labor’s police spokesperson, Walt Secord.

“That’s not true,” Secord said. “This is your own data, provided by your police service to the federal government.” The top 20 areas, with the highest percentage of urgent calls not attended, were all in metropolitan Sydney and the majority were in the city’s west.Of the state’s 57 policing regions, 43 failed to respond to one-fifth of calls within that timeframe.Sign up to receive an email with the top stories from Guardian Australia every morning
