LGBTQI advocates fear the 2021 census results, which start to be unveiled next week, will dramatically underestimate gender diversity in Australia because of a poorly worded question asking whether people identify their sex as male, female or “non-binary”.

LGBTQI groups want the next census to include questions on gender identity, sexual orientation and intersex status.“Later this year, the ABS in consultation with key stakeholders in the LGBTQI+ community to understand the complexities, data quality and usefulness of the data.” The ABS later acknowledged the figures did not accurately measure the number of people in Australia with a sex or gender other than male or female.
