The former Labor foreign minister has offered a withering critique of the Albanese government’s embrace of the defence agreement.

Already a subscriber?Former Labor foreign minister Gareth Evans has delivered a withering assessment of the Albanese government’s handling of the AUKUS agreement.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, he said, “is still preoccupied with avoiding being wedged as weak on security and has never given great attention to the complexities of foreign and defence policy and seems unlikely to change”. Professor Evans was particularly critical of the Labor government’s unwillingness to undertake a serious review of AUKUS when it came to office in May 2022. “Crucial questions were never seriously addressed”, he said, while “clearly articulated answers to them have never been given by the prime minister, defence minister or anyone else”.
