Alejandro Garnacho reflects on his first Premier League goal scored at Craven Cottage, as he continues to fight for a starting position at Manchester United.
It was there, on the banks of the Thames, where the Manchester United winger scored his first-ever Premier League goal. Fresh from stepping off the substitutes bench, he netted a dramatic 93rd-minute winner, ensuring the Reds signed off for the World Cup break with a bang, helping them clinch a 2-1 win.
That could have something to do with the fact the Argentine, who recently became a father for the first time, has often struggled to influence games from the outset. Racking up 11 direct goal contributions in United colours so far, only three of them have come as a starter, highlighting that he has generally been better as an impact player off the bench.
Garnacho scored the opening goal that evening and, as a rarity, completed the full 90 minutes. He, by contrast, stored 68 and 66 minutes under his belt when he started United's opening two Premier League games of the season against Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur in August respectively. It is why Ten Hag should award Garnacho a start against Newcastle this evening, in what is shaping up to be a fixture where both managers will make changes. The Argentine played a key role in the win over a much-changed Palace team in the last round, and he could play a similar one if given the opportunity to perform from the start, perhaps with the ambition of being rewarded with another start against Fulham at the end of it.
