A Gary man was sentenced to 60 years Thursday for his elderly neighbor’s death at a senior center high rise, court sources said.
John Cushionberry Collins, Sr., 67, July 28 of murder in perpetration of a robbery, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and burglary. He was acquitted of the top murder charge.Authorities accused him of strangling Mary Krill, 92, and taking the cash she kept in her apartment.
Police were called March 17, 2022, to Krill’s apartment at the Al Thomas Senior High Rise, 100 W. 11th Ave., after janitor Jerry Clinton and another resident discovered her body under a bunch of blankets during a welfare check. She hadn’t been seen in a few days. Security video appeared to show a man — later identified as Collins — pushing into her apartment as she opened the door, then leaving with a large white bag. He locked the door as he left, walking back to his apartment next door, charges state.
