New faces dominate leadership of the Gary Community School Corp. as it prepares to exit state control while keeping its finances on track and accelerate academic improvement.

Four newly appointed school board members and new district manager Mike Raisor mingled with a crowd Tuesday at a reception at the Gary Area Career Center.“It’s my hope and aspiration to get a clear understanding as to where we are as a district,” said board chairman Michael Suggs, a consultant and retired Northern Indiana Public Service Co. official, who was appointed by Indiana Secretary of Education Katie Jenner.

The city council appointed Vanessa Allen-McCloud, president and CEO of the Northwest Indiana Urban League and Mayor Jerome Prince selected Akilia McCain, an educator and former member of the district’s advisory board.A new state law places the new board in an advisory capacity until July 1 of next year when the state Distressed Unit Appeal Board is expected to release the district from state control.

Board member Akilia McCain said she’s focused on improving literacy with the science of reading curriculum. Just 47% of third-graders passed the spring IREAD standardized exam. A new state law requires school districts to begin implementing the curriculum.Allen-McCloud, a former Gary educator, said she wants to engage parents and connect with them to help in the learning process.
