Richardson also said it was “nonsense” that Australia had not been able to talk at a ministerial level with China considering countries such as Japan, Korea, Indonesia and the US had maintained such communication. He said Marles, who also holds the defence portfolio, would have raised the issue of Australian nationals in prison in China, as well as tensions in the Pacific.
“This just isn’t a challenge for today and tomorrow. It’s a challenge for the next 10, 15 20 years. And every time the Chinese step up in this space to advance their security interests in the South Pacific, we will need to press back.”
