A gas explosion in an apartment building has killed at least nine people, including four children, on the island of Sakhalin in far eastern Russia, according to local authorities.

A section of the five-storey building in the town of Tymovskoye collapsed on Saturday after a gas cylinder exploded in one of the apartments at around 5.30am Moscow time, authorities said. The TASS Russian news agency quoted a source in the emergency services as saying a 20-litre gas cylinder connected to a cooking stove had blown up.
Rescue teams were searching for more victims under the rubble, Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko wrote on Telegram.The town of Tymovskoye is 480 kilometres north of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, on an island in the Pacific Ocean, north of Japan.According to Mr Limarenko, residents affected by the explosion were offered temporary shelter and families who lost their homes will be paid 500,000 roubles .Russia's Investigative Committee said it was investigating the cause of the disaster.
