A massive cyber security attack carried out on one of America’s largest pipelines could see gas prices continue to rise as much of the system remains offline.
Colonial Pipeline was forced to shut down after it was the target of a ransomware attack believed to have been executed by a Russian-based criminal group – according to a former senior cyber security official. The pipeline transports nearly half of all fuel on the east coast.
The attack comes as the Biden administration finalises an executive order to improve the federal response to cyber attacks. “The Department of Energy is working directly with Colonial to get the pipelines back online and operating at full capacity as quickly and sagely as possible,” President Joe Biden said.
