Gastro warning for NSW as data shows significant rise in cases

Testing data shows that the number of rotavirus cases, the most common cause of gastroenteritis, is at some of the “highest levels of the last decade”.

There were 197 cases of gastro cases reported in the first two weeks of 2023 - this figure is usually around 40.Parents and caregivers are being urged to maintain good hand hygiene, and keep unwell children at home.NSW is experiencing a significant rise in the number of gastro cases reported across the state, with health authorities warning residents to be on alert for symptoms of the highly infectious virus.

Symptoms of gastro include nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhoea, headache, muscle aches and abdominal pain. Cases can be particularly severe among young children. “Last week, there were more than 2250 presentations to NSW emergency departments with symptoms of gastroenteritis. Presentations were particularly high in children under five years old, and in children aged five to 16 years old.”
