The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia’s new entry fee will send shockwaves through the arts sector.

An unprecedented funding crunch has forced the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia to scrap free admission for the first time in two decades.

The museum is now searching for ways to mitigate an expected slump in domestic visitors as a result of the new admission fees in the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.“We are grateful to the government for their continued support, however significant cost escalation combined with stagnant funding has necessitated this move,” Tarabay said in a statement.

Annual recurrent state government funding currently sits at $4.36 million, representing only 14 per cent of its operating costs, the museum said. Last year, the MCA posted a $2.559 operating deficit, which it funded from its cash reserves.Loading “This year, Create NSW, in partnership with Creative Australia, commissioned an independent sustainability review of the museum to identify operational enhancements to support MCA’s ongoing sustainability and success,” the spokesperson said.
