Foreign Affairs Assistant Minister Tim Watts says there is “very significant ongoing suffering” in Gaza amid Israel’s war against Hamas.
There have been calls – including from Foreign Minister Penny Wong – for a humanitarian pause to allow food, water, medicine and other essential supplies to reach the people of Gaza. Australia will give an extra $15 million in humanitarian aid to civilians in the Gaza Strip as the war continues between Israel and Hamas.
“We’ve been calling for a humanitarian pause to enable sustained, safe humanitarian access to Gaza to provide the water, the medical supplies, the sanitation, the services that are essential for the sustainment of health,” Mr Watts told Sky News Australia. “Look, we’ve been very clear and consistent from the start that Israel has a right to self-defence, and that is what it is pursuing in Gaza at the moment … but it is important that innocent civilian life is protected.”
