The UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza after the US abstained, leading Israel to cancel a high-level visit to Washington.
| Tensions rose sharply between the United States and Israel on Monday , as Tel Aviv abruptly cancelled a high-level visit to Washington after the Biden administration’s decision to permit passage of a United Nations resolution demanding an unconditional halt to fighting in Gaza.
Mr Netanyahu, in a statement, denounced the US abstention as “a retreat from the consistent American position since the beginning of the war,” one which “gives Hamas hope that international pressure will enable them to achieve a ceasefire without freeing the hostages.
Analysts say Mr Netanyahu’s bellicose rhetoric regarding a potential Rafah operation – and now, potentially, his decision to lash out at Washington – is aimed in large part at his domestic constituency.
