Geelong great Ray Card has been charged after a fatal accident on Saturday night in Lara. It has been confirmed that Card — a best-and-fairest winner for Geelong in 1983 — was driving the vehicle on the Geelong Ring Rd at around 11.20pm AEDT on Saturday. Card’s passenger, his 57-year-old wife, was tragically killed in the collision. Paramedics rushed to the scene, however, Many Card was declared dead at the scene. Card’s Ford Ranger collided with a BMW, driven by a 23-year-old Lara man.

On Tuesday, police charged Card with culpable driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death. He is due to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on November 26. Card debuted for Geelong in 1977 and retired after 110 games at the end of 1987. And he is currently the president of the Geelong Past Players and Officials Club. Treasurer of that group Nick Walsh said they had were “shattered” when they heard about the tragedy.
