The fight for female members has revealed the Garrick Club hosts the deputy prime minister, Hollywood actors, a spy boss and Supreme Court justices.
| One of Britain’s oldest men’s clubs, the Garrick, is a step closer to admitting women members following a historic decision by the club’s general committee.
“We decided to accept the legal advice of Lord Pannick. That will then be ratified by a meeting of the whole membership,” one committee member said. The move is one of the most significant steps in the club’s nearly 200-year history and could pave the way for women to be admitted for the first time as full members. Currently, they are only allowed to enter the club if invited and accompanied by a man.
Indeed, Cox, Fry and Simpson are among those who have come out publicly in favour of admitting women. The dispute has, perhaps inevitably, turned bitter, pitting a handful of committed campaigners against a larger, older group, many of whom are fine with women as guests but are reluctant to rock a boat that has sailed grandly since 1831.
Some of the committed campaigners sparked a rebellion by nominating seven prominent women, including Dame Mary Beard and former minister Amber Rudd as members, putting forward the women’s names to the upcoming committee meeting.
