KAMIN GOCK, REPORTER: Nineteen per cent - that's the national median gender pay gap. Meaning across the country for every dollar a man makes, a woman earns 81 cents.

KAMIN GOCK: The data comes from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency . They’ve been collecting the statistics since 2013 but this is the first time they’ve published details for individual employers. More than 200 employers including The Body Shop and the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles failed to submit their data on time and are on the non-compliant list.

DEANNE STEWART: That’s certainly showing the pernicious issue that we've got in society and the gendered norms of roles that women are in versus men that are typically in higher paid roles, that are earning often higher bonuses and other parts of their remuneration. So coming to our Australian business, that is comprised of our milk business plus corporate functions that support our global business. So we have no equal pay issues. We uphold our obligations there and treat that very seriously. It is really due to the composition of our workforce.

SARAH FERGUSON: So, how do you explain the fact that for women in your company there are fewer of them as you go higher up the ladder. What is the explanation for that, because there's been lots of studies done on why this happens in companies but why did it happen in your company? And so, I think we really need to focus on particularly is attracting, retaining and developing more women into higher graded roles in our organisation globally.

And if I look at our executive leadership team for our global business and particularly focused on the Australian component, three of the last five appointments have been women. DAVID BORTOLUSSI: No, we're adopting more of a continuous improvement mindset to this. So, last year, we showed a 2 per cent percentage improvement. If I look at our numbers more recently, there's another 2 per cent improvement but I appreciate that we are a bit of an outlier because of the way we that we have organised our business globally.

And I mentioned earlier that the biggest component of our business is the export of infant milk formula to various countries around the world. So they are our customers and we need to reflect that and women often know more about that than many of the men in our organisation. For example, we pay superannuation right throughout parental leave, paid and unpaid at full rates. We offer very generous early and late-stage pregnancy loss benefits, and then we also offer women's health leave for such things as fertility treatment, or managing the symptoms or treatment of perimenopause or menopause. So some of those more leading areas I think we offer as well.
