If last week’s loss revealed anything about the current state of the Jaguars’ offense, Gene Frenette writes, it’s that James Robinson and Travis Etienne should be given a heavier load.

Nothing against Trevor Lawrence, but unless the Jaguars are trailing by two or three touchdowns in the second half, a consistent winning formula for this team probably doesn’t involve their second-year quarterback throwing 40-plus passes a game.

Granted, the numbers aren’t going to play out that way every week. Some games, Lawrence will connect on a lot more than 57 percent of his passes , but it’s fair to wonder whether Pederson and offensive coordinator Press Taylor asked their quarterback to do a little too much against the Commanders. And their running backs too little. What made the season-opening loss so maddening for the Jaguars was an inability to finish drives, and it goes beyond the Etienne drop and Lawrence overthrow.

“It’s a lethal combination,” said Reich. “That’s the true strength of this team. This offense, I felt like the Jaguars ran the ball well last year when it was a tough year for the team, but yet still had a very effective run game. Not that Robinson and Etienne, who is 15 pounds lighter than Robinson and more of a home-run hitter, are on that level just yet. But it’s not a stretch to think their talent will allow them to collectively eclipse 2,000 yards combined in rushing and receiving yards on an annual basis.

“It’s going to be fun every week figuring out the best position to put them in to maximize the things that they can do for us.” There’s no question the Colts’ offensive identity is heavily tied to Taylor, who led the NFL in rushing last year with 1,811 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. He got off to a rousing start in last week’s 20-20 tie against the Houston Texans with 31 carries for 161 yards.
