Biotechnology company Genentech is expanding its local manufacturing capabilities with a $450 million investment in its Oceanside campus.pioneer in the commercial biotechnology industry
A large part of this investment in the Oceanside campus — approximately $280 million — will go toward the construction of a new biologics manufacturing facility. The company says the facility is being built and designed to use less water, energy and produce less carbonNazeli Dertsakian, vice president and general manager of Oceanside biologics operations at Genentech, said the investment also has the company leaning into technology to make the Oceanside facility more efficient and nimble.
Genentech, which is part of global pharmaceutical giant Roche, projects that the Oceanside expansion will bring about 150 full-time jobs to North County. The Oceanside campus, near the 76 freeway and Oceanside Boulevard, currently has seven buildings occupying 60 acres and just under 600,000 square feet. At the moment, it produces a medicine called Xolair for allergic asthma. But it also is capable of manufacturing oncology medicines such as Avastin and Rituxan, as well as Actemra, which is used to treat diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.
