Younger parents are spearheading a push for schools to take more responsibility for children's wellbeing by dealing with students' individual social and emotional problems

Younger parents are spearheading a push for schools to take more responsibility for children's wellbeing by dealing with students' individual social and emotional problems.

The Future of Education 2019 report by social research firm McCrindle found 28 per cent of Generation Y parents, aged 25 to 39, say schools should provide significant support for all wellbeing issues. This compared with 21 per cent of Generation X parents, aged 40 to 54.Researcher Mark McCrindle said Generation X was "shaped in an earlier era" and had a higher tolerance for an institutional approach that looked at the needs of the group rather than individual students.

As well as the generational shift in attitudes, almost half of parents indicated they personally had higher expectations than they did five years ago. In early adolescence it was about screen time and screen identity, while the senior students were worried about their place in the world and "deeply anxious" about climate change and "whether there's any point in the future".
