Researchers from the University of Sydney undertook the task in the wake of the Black Summer bushfires, when they found there was a lack of data to be able to quantify the loss to the koala population.

About 25 per cent of koala habitat was lost in New South Wales due to bushfires.A genome map shows the healthiest amount of genetic diversity in Queensland and the lowest in Victoria.

The report compiled hundreds of samples sent by wildlife workers from Queensland to Victoria and found the poorest results in Victoria, and surprisingly poor results in coastal pockets of NSW. "This is really like thinking about doing a 3 billion-piece puzzle, that's how many pieces there are in the koala genome," lead author Elspeth McLennan said. The map shows the healthiest amount of genetic diversity in Queensland, and the lowest in Victoria, which was to be expected considering the history of fur trade in the early 1900s.
