Judge Kidd has questioned whether in Pell's mind at the time he thought he could get away with his crimes, which he described as 'utterly brazen', and thought he had a degree of impunity, reports acooperjourno

Mr Gibson has recapped the offences Pell was convicted of: that after a Sunday mass in December 1996 he came across two 13-year-old choir boys who had snuck into a sacristy - the room priests use to prepare for mass and disrobe afterwards - in St Patrick's Cathedral, and sexually assaulted both.

Then, early in 1997, Pell shoved one of the boys into a wall in a corridor inside the cathedral and squeezed his genitals. Mr Gibson described Pell's crimes as serious offending against boys he was ultimately responsible for."These acts were humiliating and degrading toward each boy ... there was a degree of callous indifference in response to the boys ."

Pell's crimes displayed a breach of trust, Mr Gibson said, as he was responsible for the boys the same way a school principal was for students. "Cardinal Pell was the driving force and in charge of his cathedral and these two choristers were cogs in the cathedral wheel in Sunday masses," he said.Meanwhile, outside the court, abuse survivor advocate John Lawrance from the Care Leavers Australasia Network said he hoped George Pell would be taken off to jail as soon as today.
