For Kuku Yalanji woman Georgia Weir, running became a way to manage the impacts of trauma that she'd battled for much of her life. Now she's keen to share its incredible impact with as many people as she can.
Georgia Weir turned to running to pull her out of a crisis. Now the First Nations woman is using it to help others, tooFor years the Kuku Yalanji woman from Queanbeyan, NSW, had been experiencing the impacts of trauma, including addiction and mental health problems."It was very much from a point of desperation that I started running. was a last resort," she tellsBut running hasn't only changed Weir's life. Today she's using it to help change other people's lives, too.
"And because anxiety had reduced, my need to self-medicate had reduced. So for the first time in my life, I felt that I had a bit of control of myself, which was completely new.""You have to dig deep during the last part of a marathon because you hit what's called the wall and you need … to find something to get through," she says.
Weir, pictured running the 2023 Chicago Marathon, says running has taught her discipline and commitment on and off the track."My first marathon I ran for myself … I needed to prove to myself that I could do something, that I could achieve something that I never thought I would," she says. Dr Karl knows the best app for free podcasts, radio, music, news and audiobooks … and you don’t need to be a scientist to find it!"I just offered to the local mob in Queanbeyan because I wanted to remove those barriers to participation that a lot of people have — the cost of a personal trainer, for example.""And people came and it grew and grew and turned into something that I never thought it would.
