. Shakespeare had a new playground for his characters to interact with his audience, and it’s the play in which he reminds us that all the world’s a stage. James reminds me that Shakespeare’s original audiences were already suspending their disbelief, as all the female parts were played by men.
She believes that: “Shakespeare gives some of his most incredible truths to his female characters when they’re pretending to be boys.” This was something she first noticed while playing Portia opposite Dustin Hoffman’s Shylock in Peter Hall’s 1989 production of“Portia’s ‘quality of mercy speech’ comes out of her when she’s pretending to be a male lawyer. Because she’s not having to be a girl any more she can tell it straight.
