Germany's Defence Minister denies Berlin is unilaterally blocking shipments of Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine, but says the government is ready to move quickly on sending them if there is consensus among allies.
abc.net.au/news/germany-denies-blocking-leopard-tank-deliveries-to-ukraine/101878878German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has denied Berlin is unilaterally blocking the shipment of Leopard main battle tanks to Ukraine, but says the government is ready to move quickly on sending them if there is consensus among allies.
Speaking to reporters at a meeting of NATO and defence leaders at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Mr Pistorius denied Berlin was the sole holdout after Poland and other countries said they were waiting for Germany to lift its veto. Pressure has been building on Berlin to provide tanks to Kyiv that Ukraine sees as key in the war against Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the start of the Ramstein meeting, thanked allies for their support, but said more was needed and quickly. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government is wary of taking steps that could be considered to make it a party to the conflict with Russia, sources have told Reuters.
