An infection with the new mpox variant clade 1b is detected in Germany for the first time. It's the second case of this variant to be recorded in Europe after a severe outbreak in Africa earlier this year raised alarm.
Germany has recorded its first case of clade 1b mpox, a highly transmissible variant of the disease endemic to Congo .
The latest outbreak of mpox is different to the one that spread around the world in 2022 — and has experts on high alert. Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines are the only other nations with reported cases outside Africa., its highest level of alarm over the spread, amid the infection's rapid spread from the Democratic Republic of Congo to multiple neighbouring countries.
Clade 1 mpox tends to cause a higher number of severe infections and a higher mortality rate than clade 2 mpox, according to US health officials.
