Germany says it will keep using Russian energy for now: 'We have to be patient'
Germany's finance minister has asked for patience as the country is moving"as fast as possible" to steer itself away from Russian energy."We are willing to stop all energy imports from Russia, it's just a matter of time," Lindner added to the broadcaster.
Germany is facing mounting pressure to cut Russian energy from its economy amid criticism that the proceeds are funding the war in Ukraine. But Europe's largest economy is heavily reliant on the imported commodities: Germany buys about 25% of its oil and 40% of its natural gas from the energy powerhouse, per"I don't fear [the] economic costs [of buying less Russian energy].
"I think it's preferable to have sanctions, which we can stand for months, for years," he added to the media outlet. Lindner's comments came as German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Wednesday that the country will stop importing Russian oil by the end of the year. "I therefore say here clearly and unequivocally yes, Germany is also completely phasing out Russian energy imports," said Baerbock, according to a"We will halve oil by the summer and will be at zero by the end of the year, and then gas will follow, in a joint European roadmap, because our joint exit, the complete exit of the European Union, is our common strength," Baerbock added, per Reuters. comments earlier this month that Germany could end Russian oil imports this year.
