Germany will not face any disciplinary action from FIFA, the PA news agency understands, after taking the OneLove armband protest to a new level.

Germany to avoid FIFA’s wrath over covered mouths protest before World Cup clash

The FA declined to comment on whether the England team would copy the German gesture ahead of their match against the United States on Friday. The OneLove campaign started in September and runs for a year but was set to be especially significant during the World Cup in Qatar, a country where same-sex relationships are criminalised.

FIFA has yet to comment on what the German team did, but it is understood there will be no formal disciplinary action from the governing body. “This gesture has been decided by Germany, but I don’t think that we have to do anything as a Swiss team. We have to just accept the rules and that’s it,” the Arsenal midfielder said.

Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen said on Tuesday he felt players were afraid to speak out in Qatar and were being controlled. The Red Devils, who are also part of the OneLove group, kicked off their World Cup campaign against Canada on Wednesday night but did not make any gesture before kick-off.
