Rangers hero Scott Nisbet feared cancer treatment after his sister died in surgery
Scott Nisbet has revealed how he was terrified of going under the knife for cancer treatment because his sister died after surgery for the same illness. The Rangers hero was worried he wouldn’t survive a life-saving operation after Debra Cook died in intensive care.
"But it went horribly wrong so it was always going to be in my thoughts. I told the doctors everything that happened and they did all they could to put my mind at ease. They assured me I was in safe hands. I guess I must have been – I’m still here.” Edinburgh-born Scott held Debra’s hand when she passed away in hospital. He said: “It was the worst time. I’ll never forget that moment." He added: I needed surgery to remove four tumours and the doctors decided to get them all at once. One was close to my aorta and was in danger of wrapping itself around the artery.
Scott, who runs his own football academy in Lanzarote, said: “The surgeon admitted that he performed a procedure that was outside his comfort zone. The coroner said in his summing up that there had been severe negligence from start to finish. However, he was told he needed emergency surgery and was on the operating table within days. He has now been told by his doctor he doesn’t need another check-up for six months – the longest time between appointments since getting the bombshell diagnosis.
